“Strawberries remind me of hope and renewal. Their scarlet hues and intensely sweet flavor are a welcome after months of eating apples and pears.”
I wrote that sentiment eight years ago in the midst of a big life change, moving from my hometown of Brooklyn, NY to a tiny hamlet called Olivebridge near Woodstock, NY. While so much in life feels unpredictable, nature provides us with a necessary cadence and reminder that everything is cyclical.
Even the harshest of winters where I live give way to the promise of sweet berries, although the timing and abundance of the harvest varies each year. You can choose to preserve the season a little longer by turning it into jam, or enjoy its fleeting nature with a bite of pie, sip of homemade strawberry almond milk or a scoop of no-churn strawberry jam ice cream.
