If you suddenly find yourself struggling to keep up with your usual exercise routines, you’re not alone. At first I attributed my waning step count to being more focused on the holidays during December. Last week it occurred to me that my expectations and goals needed some adjusting for the winter months.
12,000 steps in the summer is effortless. The sun rises early, the weather is more agreeable for 90 minute walks in the morning, bookended with an evening walk before sunset. I thought buying a walking pad would help me keep pace during the winter but that has proved challenging, too. It makes sense, honestly. Our bodies and minds were meant to slow down a little during the winter, a hibernation mode of sorts.
